Determination of the process scheme for surface wastewater treatment at the facility "Mineral fertilizer transshipment terminal at the Ust-Luga Commercial Seaport".
Logistics of cargo handling at the terminal include delivery of fertilizers by hopper cars and storage in a roofed warehouse, as well as containers on railway platforms and outdoor storage.
In the course of operations and transportation of mineral fertilizers, production losses of fertilizers occur, which, together with rainwater, are discharged into the storm water drainage system and then to surface water treatment facilities.
Goal:
The purpose of the research work was to develop a process chart for surface wastewater treatment with determination of nitri- and denitrification rates, as well as other essential conditions.
Implementation:
To obtain a practical knowledge base, which served as a basis for the design of local treatment facilities for the new terminal, ECOSTECH R&D Center carried out tests on self-manufactured small-sized IBR and LBR rig installations by order of JSC "ECOS".
The tests were designed according to a special program and included several stages:

1
collection of initial data, review of the technical specification of the customer - EuroChem Terminal Ust-Luga
2
modeling of operation in accordance with the assumed technical conditions of surface wastewater treatment;
3
development of 2 basic schemes of biological oxidation process of ammonium nitrogen and nitrates - with initial denitrifier or nitrifier;
4
development of practical results in order to obtain rates of nitri oxidation and denitrification;
5
confirmation of the possibility of use and development of norms of sugar consumption as an organic substrate for realization of denitrification process;
6
generalization of the results of the scientific test and preparation of a report with recommendations for the optimal process chart of biological treatment of surface wastewater
OUTCOME:
During the study, data were obtained that allowed to provide several key recommendations for the technological process of surface wastewater treatment under these specific conditions:
- the biological treatment stage should start with nitrification and continue with denitrification;
- dephosphorization should be carried out by reagent method;
- to maintain high nitrification rate - 40-50 mg N-NH4/g∙h - the age of nitrifying sludge should be at least 40 days;
- In order to simplify the organic make-up unit and to reduce operating costs, it was found that sugar is a comfortable substitute for the recommended make-ups. For example, the COD and BOD5 contents of the substances used are as follows:
The study also determined that the following ash-free sludge load of 136 mgBOD5 per day/g should be maintained for a stable biological nitrogen removal process. No negative effects on sludge sloughing or sludge inhibition were observed when the specified sludge load was maintained.
